The Karatag ( Uzbek Qoratagʻ ; Russian Каратаг ) is the left source river of the Surxondaryo in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan .
Karatag has its source in Tajikistan on the southern slope of the Hissar Mountains , from whose glaciers it is fed. The Karatag flows through a narrow mountain valley in a southerly direction over a distance of 40 km. At the city of Shahrinaw the river leaves the mountains and reaches the plains of the western Hisortals . It flows south past the town of Tursunsoda and takes up the Schirkent from the right. It flows a short distance further and reaches the northwest flank of the Babatag mountain range, along which it continues its course in a south-southwest direction. About 10 km above its mouth it crosses the state border with Uzbekistan. Finally he meets the Tupalangdarja and unites with him to the Surxondaryo.
The karatag has a length of 112 km. The catchment area covers approx. 800 km². The Karatag has an average discharge of 22.4 m³ / s at the Karatog gauge about 50 km above the mouth.
