Karekare is a small coastal settlement in the Auckland Council urban areaon the North Island of New Zealand . Until October 2010, the settlement belonged to the then independent city of Waitakere City , which wasassigned tothe Auckland Council from November 2010and has been called Waitakere Ward since then.
geography
The settlement is located around 30 km southwest of downtown Auckland and 3.5 km south of Piha Beach . East of the settlement are the Waitakere Ranges . The settlement is accessed via a narrow road that leads from the Glen Eden district via the Waiatarua settlement through the Waitakere Ranges to Karekare .
history
The settlement was celebrated by Crowded House in 1993 on their album Together Alone , which was largely recorded here. The film " The Piano " shows recordings from the beach at Karekare and Piha .
tourism
Karekare is a popular summer getaway for residents of Auckland city centers . Nevertheless, the settlement has retained much of its natural beauty and remoteness. Karekare is not as busy as Piha.
The undercurrents on the coastal stretch of the settlement are unpredictable and can change without any signs. Despite the service of lifeguards, there have been repeated deaths from drowning in the past. Anglers who underestimate the surf on the rocks can be washed off the rocks.
