Karel Bělohoubek (born December 29, 1942 in Žarošice ; Moravia ; † December 31, 2016 in Prague ) was a Czech composer , conductor , clarinetist and bassoonist .

He decided quite early on to join a military wind orchestra. From 1956 to 1959 he studied bassoon and clarinet in the military music school in Raudnitz an der Elbe near Leitmeritz .

After graduating in 1959, he became a member of the military band in Mies and stayed there until 1961. In the same year he was transferred to Prague , where he initially worked in a garrison military band and later in the central orchestra of the Czechoslovak army . At the same time he continued his bassoon studies with Karel Pivoňka and conducting with Bohuslav Čížek at the Prague Conservatory . In 1978 he became conductor of the Central Orchestra of the Czechoslovak Army in Prague; In 1987 he became chief conductor and remained so until his retirement in 1999.

He became interested in instrumentation when he was still a student, and continued to develop his skills as an arranger and composer. He initially made arrangements for the wind orchestra for the overture to the opera The Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana , for the Boléro by Maurice Ravel and for the symphonic dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein . Later he created his own compositions, which were often performed by the Czechoslovak Army Orchestra and recorded on CD.
