Karel Hendrik Geerts

Karel Hendrik Geerts (born August 10, 1807 in Antwerp , † June 16, 1855 in Leuven ) was a Belgian neo-Gothic sculptor who was best known for his wood carving art.

Karel Geerts studied at the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp as a student of JB Van Hool and JA van der Ven from 1824 to 1833. He married Ludovica Maria Ruelens. In 1833 or 1935 he became professor of sculpture at the Academy in Leuven and remained so until his death.

From 1842 he was trained in a sculpture studio in the Savoyestraat in Leuven . From this he developed a school with around 60 pupils. In 1846 he bought a wing of the former Savoy College on the same street. The sculptors Jan Abeloos (1819–1886) and François Vermeylen the Elder were among others in these buildings. educated.

Because of his meritorious work, Geerts was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion ; he also received the Leopold Order .

Julius Bayerle was one of his students .

The priest and writer Floris Prims described him in 1936 as a role model for many students; he introduced them to the wooden sculpture.

In Borgerhout (Antwerp) the Karel Geertsstraat was named after him.
