Karel Herbst SDB (born November 6, 1943 in Prague ) is a Czech religious and emeritus Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Prague .

Life

Herbst first learned the profession of railroad electrician and practiced it until 1968 in the depot of the Prague central station. He also attended an evening high school . Then he entered the seminary in Leitmeritz . After completion of the philosophical and theological studies at the Theological Faculty in Litomerice was on June 23 in 1973 by Cardinal Tomasek for ordained priests . At first he worked as a chaplain until the communist authorities withdrew his permission to exercise his office in 1975. In the underground, on September 11, 1976, he made the perpetual vows as the Salesian of Don Bosco . Together with the former Archbishop of Prague Miloslav Vlk , he worked as a window cleaner from 1975 to 1986. In the secret pastoral care he made a name for himself as part of the so-called hut apostolate. When he was officially able to work as a priest again in 1986, he was pastor in several parishes from 1986 to 1989, from 1990 to 1997 director of the Salesian Center in Prague- Kobylisy , and finally from 1997 to 2000 spiritual in the Archbishopric Seminary in Prague-Dejvice. From 2000 to 2002 he led a Salesian community in Frystak .

On February 19, 2002 Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Prague , associated with the titular diocese of Siccesi . The episcopal ordination took place on April 6, 2002 by the Prague Archbishop Cardinal Vlk.

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on December 1, 2016.
