Karel Rafael Ungar (born April 12, 1744 in Saaz , † July 14, 1807 in Prague ) was a Catholic priest, pioneer of the National Rebirth of the Czechs movement and historian.

Life

Karel Rafael Ungar was born as Carolus Christianus Norbertus, son of the later Saaz primator Karl Ungar and Rosalia Ungar, née Ulrich, in 1744 in Saaz. Ungar initially worked as the administrator of the numismatic department in the Premonstratensian monastery in Strahov Monastery . From 1773 he taught philosophy, science, mathematics and theology. In 1780, Ungar was appointed administrator of the library at Charles University in Prague. Thanks to his merit, this only public library in Bohemia became an important cultural center. The number of titles alone tripled during his activity. The categorization of the directories he introduced is still used today. In 1788 he left the Premonstratensian Order, thereby manifesting his consent to the Josephinian reforms .

Works

His efforts to track down old Bohemian works and his concentration on Bohemian literature were particularly appreciated by the representatives of the national movement. He worked closely with Nikolaus Adaukt Voigt , dealt with Dobrovský and published the work by Bohuslav Balbín Bohemia docta (Učené Čechy - German educated Bohemia) in the Czech language, previously published in Latin . From 1786 to 1788 he was dean, from 1789 to 1790 rector of the university. As a member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences , he wrote five books on the history of Bohemian culture.
