Karel Tůma (born September 6, 1843 in Prague ; died May 9, 1917 there ) was a Czech journalist, writer and politician.

Life

Karel Tůma was the son of a Bohemian judge. He attended high school in Rychnov nad Kněžnou , Hradec Králové and Písek . He broke off his studies at the Prague Polytechnic and in 1862 joined the editorial team of the newspaper Národní listy , of which he was a member until his death, from his retirement in 1912 as a senior editor. He married the singer Marie Čelakovská (1841-1892), a daughter of the writer František Ladislav Čelakovský , whose brothers belonged to the left-liberal Czech bourgeoisie. His daughter Marie Tůmová became a teacher and campaigned for the national suffrage of Czechs and women's suffrage in Austria-Hungary.

Tůma wrote poetry for the Czech national movement at an early age and was the editor of a songbook when the Sokol gymnastics association was founded in 1862 . From 1870 he was the responsible political editor and wrote around 5000 leading articles in the following years. He also published in the Svoboda newspaper and in the literary magazines Lumír and Kvety.

In 1868 he and Josef Barák were sentenced to three years' imprisonment for political reasons and only given amnesty in 1870. In 1874 both were among the founders of the Národní strana svobodomyslná (Young Czechs). He ran several times in vain for the Bohemian Landtag and was then a member of the Landtag from 1883 to 1895. He called for equal male suffrage. In 1896 he withdrew from active politics.

In addition to his journalistic work, Tůma published political biographies, stories, humoresques and comedies.
