Karl-Heinz Mauritz

Karl-Heinz Mauritz (born August 7, 1944 ) is a German neurologist , rehabilitation doctor and university professor. Until 2012 he was medical director and chief physician of the neurological department of the Berlin Clinic (today Median Clinic Berlin-Kladow).

Education and professional career

Karl-Heinz Mauritz studied medicine and psychology at the universities of Munich and Saarbrücken from 1964 to 1970 and completed his medical studies with the state examination. From 1970 to 1973 he worked as a scientific employee at the 1st Physiological Institute of Saar University and at the Surgical and Medical University Clinic Homburg / Saar, where he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. After a brief activity in the department of psychology at the University of Konstanz, he worked from 1974 to 1981 in the department of clinical neurology and neurophysiology at the University of Freiburg under Richard Jung , where he was qualified as a specialist in neurology in 1979 and completed his habilitation with a thesis on "Standard ataxia in cerebellar lesions".

This was followed by stays as a Heisenberg fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda , USA (1981–1983), at the Center for Paraplegics at Cleveland Hospital, USA (1983–1985) and at the Neurological University Clinic in Düsseldorf under Hans-Joachim Freund (1985 -1986).

From 1986 to 1989 he was full professor and head of the rehabilitation center at the University of Cologne , and at the same time head of the Institute for Rehabilitation and Disabled Sports at the German Sport University Cologne . From 1989 to 2012 he was medical director and chief physician in neurology at the Berlin Clinic (today Median Clinic Berlin-Kladow) and at the same time the first German C4 professor for neurological rehabilitation at the Steglitz University Hospital of the Free University of Berlin (today the Benjamin Franklin campus of the Charité ). He is currently in charge of the newly established Zheijang Yada International Rehabilitation Hospital in China.

Scientific career

At the beginning of his career, Karl-Heinz Mauritz examined the organization of sensorimotor functions in clinical and animal experiments. From the mid-80s he turned to rehabilitation medicine and initially dealt with neuroprosthetics for paraplegia. Later he focused on rehabilitation after stroke. Numerous modern therapy methods, such as device-supported motor rehabilitation, repetitive training or Impairment Oriented Training (IOT) were significantly developed at the Berlin Clinic under his leadership.

He is the author of numerous scientific articles, was a member of the editorial boards of several international journals and the Scientific Board of Trustees of the Hannelore Kohl Foundation and the German Stroke Foundation.

Through the combination of clinical care and university connection in neurological rehabilitation for the first time in Germany, Karl-Heinz Mauritz contributed significantly to the academization of this discipline. This model was later adopted by several institutions. He is the founding board member of the German Society for NeuroRehabilitation and the Rehabilitation Science Association Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony . He is also involved in the development of rehabilitation in China and several former CIS countries.

Awards

Karl-Heinz Mauritz has received numerous national and international awards and honors. He is the only German neurologist who has been awarded both the Heinrich Pette Prize (1980) and the HJ Bauer Rehabilitation Prize (2008) from the German Society for Neurology . He is an honorary member of the German Society for NeuroRehabilitation and recipient of the gold medal of the Association of Brain Injured People (BDH).
