Karl-Heinz Werner (Judoka)

Karl-Heinz Werner (born September 17, 1949 in Rodewisch ) is a former German judoka who competed for the GDR . He won four bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

The 1.69 m tall Karl-Heinz Werner competed in the lightweight until 1976, the weight class up to 63 kilograms. After the reorganization of the weight classes, he started in 1977 in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms. In the weight class up to 65 kilograms he had already won the 1967 European Cadet Championships.

In 1970 he won his first bronze medal at the European Championships in East Berlin , followed by the second in 1971 in Gothenburg . At the World Championships in 1971 in Ludwigshafen, he lost his first fight to the Swiss Peter Wiler . In April 1972 Werner won the open Dutch championships. A month later he won bronze again at the European Championships in Voorburg.

In September 1972 Werner entered the Olympic Games in Munich. In his first fight he defeated the Moroccan Moustafa Belhmira by a judge's decision (Yusei-gachi). In the second round he beat the Belgian Gustaaf Lauwereins after 4:21 minutes. In the third round, Karl-Heinz Werner was eliminated by Yusei-Gachi against Wolfram Koppen from the Federal Republic of Germany.

At the European Championships in Madrid in 1973 , Werner defeated, among others, the French Jean-Jacques Mounier in the round of 16 and the Hungarian József Tuncsik in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals he lost to Schengeli Pizchelauri from the Soviet Union. By defeating the Yugoslav Branko Vidmajer , Karl-Heinz Werner won his fourth bronze medal at the European Championships. In Lausanne at the 1973 World Championships , Werner was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Frenchman Michel Algisi .

Karl-Heinz Werner competed for the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt . In the GDR championships in 1969 and 1970 he was second behind Dieter Scholz . In 1972 he won his first championship title, in 1973 he lost again to Dieter Scholz. In 1974 he won his second championship title, in 1976 he lost to Ingolf Lahr . In 1977 he won his last international tournament in Pleven, Bulgaria. At the GDR championships he won in 1977 in the half-light weight.
