Karl-Peter Sommermann

Karl-Peter Sommermann (born January 5, 1956 in Bonn ) is a German legal scholar.

Sommermann studied law and history at the Universities of Bonn and Geneva . After a one-year research stay in Madrid , he received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Bonn and passed his second state examination in 1986. After that, Sommermann worked as a research assistant at the Institute for International Law at the University of Bonn. In 1989 he became the executive assistant at the Research Institute for Public Administration at the German University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer . In 1996 he completed his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin in the subjects of public law , international and European law and constitutional history . This was followed by substitute professorships at the Universities of Kiel , Regensburg and Halle-Wittenberg , where he was offered a chair for public law. Sommermann has been a professor at DHV Speyer since 1998. From 1999 to 2001 he was also director of the research institute for public administration at DHV Speyer and from 2001 to 2007 its deputy director. From October 2004 to 2007 and from October 2009 to 2010 he was prorector in Speyer. From April 2007 to September 2009 he held the office of Rector.

Sommermann's main research areas are the Europeanization of constitutional and administrative law, comparative law , statehood and globalization, international human rights protection and development cooperation.

Together with Hartmut Bauer , he is the editor-in-chief for the specialist journal The Public Administration .

In 2014 he was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Komtur).

From 2017 to 2019, Sommermann was chairman of the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers .
