biography

In 1309, when his father ascended the throne, he was appointed Duke of Calabria and Vicar General for the Kingdom of Sicily . His father intended to take him to Florence in 1315 with an army that had asked for help, but the job was then carried out by his younger brother Philip I of Taranto . The Neapolitan-Florentine coalition was badly defeated in the Battle of Montecatini .

In 1316 he married Katharina von Habsburg (1295–1323), daughter of the German King Albrecht I. After her death, he married Maria von Valois (1309–1332), daughter of Karl von Valois . They had five children:

  • Eloisa († December 1325)
  • Marie (1326-1328)
  • Karl Martel (born April 13, 1327 in Florence , † April 21, 1327 there)
  • Joan I (1328–1382), Queen of Naples
  • Maria (1329-1366), Countess of Alba; ∞ Charles, Duke of Durazzo .

The victory of Castruccio Castracani in Altopascio in 1325 meant that the Florentines elected Charles as lord ( signore ) of the city for 10 years . At that time he was trying unsuccessfully to give Sicily to his cousin Friedrich III. to snatch, and therefore sent Walter VI. from Brienne for a few months as his representative in the city. Karl himself then quickly made himself unpopular with his measures in the city and was recalled in December 1327 in view of the approaching emperor Ludwig IV . He died in Naples in 1328.
