Karl Appelmann

Karl Appelmann (born January 24, 1915 in Offenbach am Main ; † May 9, 2015 ) was a German SPD politician .

Life and work

After attending primary school in Offenbach am Main, Appelmann completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator and then worked for the municipal utilities in his hometown. In 1936 he was arrested by the Gestapo for several months for political reasons. From 1941 to 1943 he studied mechanical engineering and graduated in 1944 as a mechanical engineer. Afterwards he worked as a parts designer, job broker at the Offenbach employment office and was then again employed by the municipal utilities. Later he was an honorary board member of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt in Offenbach for more than 30 years .

Political party

Appelmann joined the SPD and the Socialist Youth Workers in 1931 . For the latter, he worked illegally even after the ban in 1933. After the Second World War he got involved in the reconstruction of the SPD in Offenbach, of which he was district chairman in the 1950s.

MP

Appelmann was a member of the state parliament in Hesse from 1946 to 1962 . In the state parliament he also campaigned for the independence of Offenbach, which was to be incorporated into Frankfurt am Main according to plans by the American occupying power .

Public offices

From 1956 to 1980 Appelmann was full-time mayor of Offenbach am Main and in this position head of the sports and health department and, since 1962, also responsible for the municipal utilities.

Honors

In 1978 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany and made an honorary citizen of the city of Offenbach.
