Karl August Auberlen (born November 19, 1824 in Fellbach ; † May 2, 1864 in Basel ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

He was the eldest son of the Fellbach schoolmaster Wilhelm Amandus Auberlen , attended the education department in Esslingen , then the seminar in Blaubeuren, and studied philosophy and theology at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen from 1841 onwards . Repelled by the then predominant critical-speculative tendency, under the influence of his teacher Johann Tobias Beck , he turned to the old Württemberg theologians of the Bengel School and delved into the writings of Friedrich Christoph Oetinger .

Auberlen completed his vicariate with Wilhelm Hofacker in Stuttgart and wrote his first work Theosophy Friedrich Christoph Oetingers (1847) during this time . A scientific trip through northern Germany, Belgium and Holland with a longer stay in Berlin served to expand his horizons and to establish personal relationships. From 1849 to 1851 he was a repetiteur at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen, a position that gave him the opportunity to become a first academic teacher and contributed to the further training of his biblical-theological and theosophical direction. From 1851 to 1864 he was associate professor of theology in Basel, where he finally died after four years of nervous disorders.

Auberlen tombstone
