Karl Bender (politician)

Franz Karl Andreas Bender (born December 21, 1880 in Lahr ; † February 20, 1970 in Karlsruhe ) was a German politician (center). He was Lord Mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau from 1922 to April 9, 1933 .

Life

After high school , Bender studied law in Freiburg , Berlin and Heidelberg . At the age of 28, he became mayor of Bühl (Offenburg) . During the First World War he achieved the rank of captain of the reserve. In 1919 he became a Ministerialrat in the Stuttgart Ministry of the Interior. Three years later he was elected Lord Mayor of Freiburg. The administrative specialist Bender reorganized the city administration, the municipal finances and gave important impulses for the expansion of the culture and infrastructure of the city. In 1931 he was re-elected Lord Mayor.

After systematic agitation by the NSDAP district leader Franz Kerber and the combat paper Der Alemanne , Bender gave up his office on April 9, 1933. The support of the entire city council, the university rectors Joseph Sauer , Wilhelm von Möllendorff and Archbishop Conrad Gröber could not dissuade him from this step. Then Bender went underground in the Beuron monastery . Continued attacks resulted in his family being forced to leave the city as well. Already on 10 April 1933, by the Minister of the Interior on the basis of the Reich President for the Protection of the German People Regulation the duties until further notice transmitted to Franz Kerber. Bender later established himself as a lawyer in Karlsruhe. There he died at the age of 89.

He was a member of the Catholic student associations KStV Bavaria Freiburg, KStV Laetitia Karlsruhe, KStV Paladin Heidelberg and KStV Askania Berlin.

Honors

  • In recognition of his services to the university clinics, the University of Freiburg honored him with an honorary doctorate in medicine.
  • In 1957 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Freiburg.
