Death and tomb

Bennewitz von Loefen's hereditary burial with the grave monument from Ignatius Taschner

Karl Bennewitz von Loefen the Elder died in Eutin in 1895 at the age of 68. He was buried in Cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor in Berlin. In the family vault his wife Ida rest born Cramer (1828–1908), their son Fritz (1854–1932) and their daughter Elise (1864–1934). There is also the grave of his son Karl the Younger (1856–1931) and his wife Emy, nee. Schlieper (1853–1899) nearby.

The artistically remarkable, Art Nouveau grave monument comes from the sculptor Ignatius Taschner , who also created the adjacent grave pillar for the daughter-in-law Emy. A relief medallion is located on the front of the sandstone stele that tapers towards the top. The marble tondo shows a woman with long hair and a narrow headband in profile. The inscription "ARS" identifies them as the personification of art, which refers to the work of the deceased.
