August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer (born May 6, 1802 in Berlin , † June 8, 1866 in Nyon ) was a German painter .

The similarity of names and the overlap in lifetime and subject lead to frequent confusion with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807–1863).

Life

Wilhelm Schirmer began his career as a flower painter. Until 1823 he was employed by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin . He then devoted himself to landscape painting and was involved in the redesign of the Glienicke park and palace , where he worked with Peter Joseph Lenné . He spent the years from 1827 to 1831 in Italy .

After his return he settled in Berlin and founded a studio here, which in a short time became the focus of a large group of students. During this time he worked with Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau for the illustrations in his hints about landscape gardening . In 1835 he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy , where he taught landscape painting from 1839. In 1843, Carl Blechen names 1840, he became a professor and in 1852 a member of the Senate.

On returning home from a trip to Italy, Wilhelm Schirmer died in Nyon on Lake Geneva in June 1866 at the age of 64. He was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg near Berlin. The grave has not been preserved.
