Albert Zimmermann (painter)

August Albert Zimmermann (born September 20, 1809 in Zittau , † October 18, 1888 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Life

He was the oldest brother of Max , Robert and Richard Zimmermann , some of whom were also his students.

Zimmermann turned 21 years as an autodidact of landscape painting and went for training at the Academy of Dresden and 1831 München . There he founded a popular painting school for landscape painting. In 1857 he received a professorship at the Milan Art Academy , where he was followed by his favorite student Adalbert Waagen . In 1859 or 1860 Zimmermann went to Vienna , where he worked at the Academy of Fine Arts until 1872 . He then took up residence in Salzburg in 1880 and moved to Munich in 1884 or 1885, where he died in 1888.

Zimmermann was an outstanding representative of heroic-historical landscape painting . He chose the motifs for his grandiose stylized landscapes with preference from mountain nature (often with biblical staffage), but also painted nature portraits with poetic lighting. His role models were Joseph Anton Koch and Bonaventura Genelli .
