Max Zimmermann (born July 7, 1811 in Zittau , † December 29, 1878 in Munich ) was a German painter.

August Maximilian Zimmermann, as his full name was called, was the younger brother of the painter Albert Zimmermann and the older brother of the painters Robert and Richard Zimmermann . He first started a career as a musician and then turned to lithography . In 1834 he went to Dresden , where he saw good prospects for this technology. It was not until 1837 that he followed his older brother to Munich in order to devote himself to landscape painting in his early-renowned painting school.

His landscapes are characterized by strong coloring and serious mood; his oak paintings are particularly appreciated. His role models were the Dutch masters Meindest Hobbema and Ruisdael . He also made beautiful forest etchings. Zimmermann died in Munich, where he had lived for a long time. However, a hand injury ended his career in the early 1870s.
