Karl Busch (engineer)

Karl Busch (born April 20, 1929 in Lörrach ) is a German entrepreneur specializing in vacuum pump technology ; he is considered a pioneer and hidden champion of vacuum packaging for food. Together with his wife Ayhan Busch, he founded the Dr.-Ing. Karl Busch GmbH .

Karl Busch grew up in Zell im Wiesental , where he attended elementary school and had daily dealings with the production of compressors in the Löwenhof, the machine factory of his grandfather Karl Wittig . After attending secondary school in Schopfheim , an apprenticeship as a machinist and high school diploma in 1949, he began studying mechanical engineering at the TH-Munich . In 1960 he received his doctorate in engineering. with the dissertation Friction and Wear in Water-Lubricated Rotary Compressors . He then became head of design at Wittig in Zell (now Gardner Denver Schopfheim GmbH) until its takeover by Mannesmann .

In 1963 he founded together with his wife Ayhan Busch in Schopfheim the "Dr.-Ing. Karl Busch GmbH ”, which later moved to Maulburg . Busch shaped industrial vacuum technology worldwide for over five decades and is considered a visionary and pioneer in the market segment for vacuum packaging machines. His invention of the space-saving two-stage Huckepack rotary vane vacuum pump was the prerequisite for the introduction of vacuum packaging technology in the food industry.

In 2017, in addition to the two founders Karl and Ayhan Busch, their three children were also part of the management team of the family company Busch Vacuum Pumps and Systems, which has more than 60 own companies in over 40 countries.

On October 1, 2015, the Maulburg community made Karl and Ayhan Busch honorary citizens.
