Karl Diel

Karl Diel (born February 14, 1855 in Hatzfeld , Austrian Empire ; † May 1, 1930 Jimbolia , Kingdom of Romania ) was a surgeon , head of the hospital in the Torontaler County in Hatzfeld.

Live and act

After primary school, Karl Diel attended high school in Szarvas in his hometown . He then studied medicine at the University of Budapest . In 1878 he received his doctorate in medicine .

From 1872 to 1878 Diel worked as an assistant doctor in the surgical department of the Rochus University Clinic in Budapest . Here he acquired himself at the side of Dr. Dollinger developed his specialist knowledge in the field of surgery .

In 1882 he returned to his hometown as a practicing doctor and in the following years made great contributions to the development of the health system in the Banat , especially in Hatzfeld (since 1923 Jimbolia ). The establishment of the Hatzfeld County Hospital in 1896, which he took over as head, goes back to his initiative. In the 1920s he also ran a small private sanatorium in Jimbolia.

Karl Diel, who performed more than 50,000 operations in his fifty-year medical career, earned the reputation of a pioneer of modern surgery in the Banat. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, one of his colleagues wrote:

“We doctors in particular know how to properly assess what it means to sit in Hatzfeld and keep up with Vienna and Berlin. (...) Neither a Timisoara, nor an Arader, Großbetschkereker or Großkikinda hospital could even come close to competing with the Hatzfelder and his successful doctor. None of the many doctors of his time copied him… ”.

On May 1, 1930, shortly after he turned 75, Karl Diel died in his hometown, where he was buried on May 4.

Karl Diel's work was continued by his son Ludwig Diel (1888–1944) and his son-in-law Pius Brânzeu (1911–2002).

Honors

  • Order of Ferdinand I - awarded by King Ferdinand I in recognition of his exemplary medical work and his self-sacrificing service to people.
  • November 24, 1940 - Unveiling in Jimbolia of the life-size statue of Karl Diel, the work of the Timisoara sculptor Géza Rubletzky .
  • 1996 - Unveiling of the bust of Karl Diel, a work by the Hatzfeld sculptor Theophil Soltész , on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Hatzfeld hospital.
  • 1998 - the Hatzfeld hospital received the suffix “Dr. Karl Diel ”.
  • 2000 - A memorial was erected in the house where he was born, on the initiative of his great-granddaughter Pia Brânzeu with the support of the city administration and the hospital management.
