Pius Brânzeu

Pius Brânzeu (born January 25, 1911 in Vulcan , Hunedoara County , Romania ; † July 1, 2002 in Timișoara ) was a Romanian surgeon , professor of the Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Victor Babes , head of the surgical clinic of the Regional Directorate for Transport in Timișoara and a member of the Romanian Academy Bucharest .

Pius Brânzeu was born in Vulcan, Hunedoara County. His father Nicolae Brânzeu was a Greek Catholic priest and his mother Emilia was a teacher. He spent his childhood in Banat Comloşu Mare and school in Lugoj , where he graduated from the Lyceum "Coriolan Brediceanu".

Pius Brânzeu studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg, France , from 1932 to 1939 . In 1939 he wrote his dissertation on the subject of "Contributions à l'étude anatomo-clinique des artérites oblitérantes croniques" with his doctoral supervisor René Leriche .

On December 16, 1940, Pius Brânzeu came to the "Clinic for Surgery Aurel Cândea" ( Romanian: Spitalul Clinic Dr. Aurel Cândea; former citizen's hospital ) in Timișoara. On July 15, 1945 he was appointed lecturer in surgery at the newly founded medical institute. He held this position until 1981. In the period from 1946 to 1976 he was Rector of the Medical and Pharmaceutical University Victor Babes in Timișoara.

With the establishment of the university clinics, Pius Brânzeu became deputy head of the “Clinic for Surgery I” ( Romanian: Clinica de Chirurgie I; former military hospital ) under the direction of Ion Făgărăşanu in 1946 . He then held this position at what was then the New Clinic ( Romanian: Clinicile Noi; today: Municipal Hospital, Romanian: Spitalul Clinic Municipal ) until 1959, when he became head of the "Surgical Clinic of the Regional Directorate for Transport" ( Romanian: Spitalul Clinic CFR Timisoara ) took over and managed it until 1981.

Pius Brânzeu was a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy from 1974 and its full member from 1990.
