Karl Erb (born June 25, 1926 in Belp ; † September 5, 2018 in Muralto ) was a Swiss sports journalist and author .

biography

Karl Erb grew up as the eldest of three sons of Fritz Erb in Zurich . From 1946 he worked as a freelance journalist for numerous specialist and daily magazines (with reports and articles on skiing, riding, cars, military sports, etc.), and from 1953 he also acted as press officer and court spokesman for internationally important sporting events (including the 1954 World Cup in Bern, European Athletics Championships 1954 in Bern, Alpine Ski World Championships 1974 in St. Moritz, CSIO Switzerland , Tour de Suisse , Lauberhorn races , Hahnenkamm races , World Championships 1958 - riding CSIO Switzerland Lucerne / St. Gallen).

From 1961 to 1983 he worked as a commentator for Swiss television , namely for alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, horse riding, athletics, cycling and Formula 1. Erb had his very first commitment to television in 1955 when he commented on the Formula 1 race in Monza could. (After the accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955 , the Federal Council banned circuit racing in its own country, and television did not broadcast any Formula 1 races for many years until the successes of Jo Siffert and Clay Regazzoni ).

In 1961, along with Serge Lang , Erb was one of the founders of the Association Internationale des Journalistes de Ski (AIJS). Anecdotally, he said that he had given self-stopped intermediate times from the Hanegg shot during the first live broadcast of the Lauberhorn race. His comment on Bernhard Russi's victory run at the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1970 made him popular . Russi later began his longstanding activity as a co-commentator at Erb's side.

Erb was the author and editor of numerous works on sports topics.

He had a daughter from his second marriage with the former ski racer Sylvia Zimmermann . From 1993 he lived on Lake Maggiore and died in September 2018 with the help of the euthanasia organization Exit at the age of 92 at home in Muralto.
