Karl Fürhapter was one of thirteen children of Georg Fürhapter, a farmer at the Unterkaftehof, and his wife Maria, geb. Niederhofer. He did an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then learned how to carve and paint a barrel , probably in Defereggen or Innichen . In Innervillgraten he ran a carpentry shop and was also active in handicrafts. Fürhapter lived in modest circumstances, he was never married and a sister ran the household for him. The passionate hunter lost an eye in a hunting accident after 1867. He died on June 3, 1883 of a lung infection and was buried in the cemetery in Innervillgraten.

Fürhapter carved heads of deer, roe deer and chamois, which were sold with antlers or horns on. He created crucifixes and figures of saints mainly from models in baroque forms with good artistic quality.
