Karl Freytag (born September 26, 1831 in Braunschweig , † September 26, 1908 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German zoo technician and agricultural scientist .

Life

Karl Freytag was born on September 26, 1831 in Braunschweig. He attended a secondary school in his hometown , then the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig and the Agricultural Academy in Poppelsdorf . From 1859 he owned an estate in Quickborn , which he later used for scientific research. From 1864 he headed the testing field of the Poppelsdorf Academy. The University of Rostock doctorate him in 1866 for Doctor Phil.

From 1870 he was administrator of the experimental field of the agricultural zoo at the University of Halle. In this and the following year he also took part in the Franco-German War . He was also head of a medical corps outside Metz . For this he was awarded the Iron Cross, second class, with a white ribbon .

In the spring of 1871 Freytag was appointed to teach at the University of Halle. From 1875 he taught special animal breeding and agricultural accounting as an associate professor . From this time on he made study trips that took him to Spain , Scandinavia , Russia , the Balkans , Belgium , England and Scotland .

Freytag also dealt with the breeding of sheep , cattle and horses . To judge sheep's wool , he used a microscope , which he used to improve test methods in breeding selection.

Freytag died on September 26, 1908 in Halle. His grave is in the Halle North Cemetery .
