Karl Georg von Treutler

Karl Georg Christoph Richard Hans Joachim von Treutler (born April 9, 1858 in Waldenburg ; † May 27, 1933 in Ober Bögendorf ) was a lawyer, officer, real secret councilor and diplomat in the German Empire. As a confidante of Kaiser Wilhelm II, he was called "The Gray Excellency".

Life

Treutler, son of Klara Alberti and Oswald von Treutler, became active in the Corps Saxo-Borussia Heidelberg in 1877 . He studied law in Heidelberg and Leipzig . In 1885 he passed his first legal exam in Berlin . From 1878 he was initially an officer in the Goetzen Hussar Regiment . A fall from his horse ended his military career in 1892 and he was able to switch to the diplomatic service through connections . From 1895 to 1899 he was the legation secretary in Japan , and from 1897/98 there as envoy . He then became ambassador of the German Reich in Brazil from 1901 to 1907 and envoy to Norway from 1907 to 1911. From 1911 to 1918 Treutler was the Prussian envoy in Bavaria, and during the First World War he was also the representative of the Foreign Office at the Kaiser’s headquarters from 1914 to 1916. From 1920 to 1923 he was chairman of the border commission in the east.
