Karl Gerlach (born April 13, 1907 in Herold ; † August 15, 1988 ) was a German cultural functionary in the GDR.

Life

Gerlach was born as a working class child in the Saxon Ore Mountains . He joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany at an early stage and became a councilor in Herold. After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 he was relieved of that office.

After the Second World War he became a member of the SED in 1946 and, as such, headed the culture department at the Marienberg District Council . He later moved to the Zschopau district council . In 1955 Karl Gerlach was appointed to the district management of the Kulturbund for the democratic renewal of Germany in Karl-Marx-Stadt . There he was secretary for nature and homeland until 1976. As such, he became a member of the editorial team of the Sächsische Heimatblätter , the magazine for Saxon history, monument preservation, nature and the environment, which was published by the Kulturbund der GDR of the districts Dresden, Karl-Marx-Stadt and Leipzig. He also worked as a member of the editorial team of Heimatfreund for the Erzgebirge . Occasionally he also wrote his own articles on the natural and local history of the Ore Mountains.

We owe Karl Gerlach in particular the annual district hiking meetings of nature and homeland friends, which were also held in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district at his suggestion . He himself also worked as an expert hiking guide. Until his death he lived in Herold, his birthplace, where he was remembered especially as a hiker and pipe smoker .

Honors

Karl Gerlach has received several awards from the party and state organs and the Kulturbund of the GDR. In the opinion of his contemporaries, he has done outstanding work for the cultural and political concerns of nature and homeland, especially in the Ore Mountains and Vogtland .
