Karl Grell (born September 5, 1925 in Vienna ; † September 6, 2003 there ) was an Austrian composer and conductor .

Life

Karl Grell took violin lessons at the age of eight, at 14 he founded a dance band with schoolmates, and one year later he began to play the clarinet. After graduating from high school and completing military service from 1943 to 1945, he studied musicology at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory, violin and clarinet, later composition with Hugo Zelzer and conducting with Kurt Wöss .

In addition to his engagements as a violinist in various dance orchestras, from 1949 he worked as an arranger for the radio station Rot-Weiß-Rot . From 1954 he worked as a freelance program designer at Radio Wien as well as assistant and arranger of Robert Stolz , for whom he arranged over 400 tracks. In total, Grell wrote over 1,600 arrangements.

In 1955 he founded the Vienna Soloist Orchestra for ORF , which he directed for around 30 years. From 1971 to 1986 he was department head for entertainment and folk music at Radio Wien, and from 1978 to 1990 he was a permanent guest conductor of the RTV orchestra of Radio Novi Sad . From 1990 to 1995 he directed the newly founded Vienna Conservatory Orchestra (VCO).

Grell died on September 6, 2003 at the age of 78 and was buried at the Hütteldorfer Friedhof (group 2, number G8).

At the corner of Daringergasse 10 and Traklgasse 12-16, there is a memorial stone for Karl Grell erected in 1958/59 according to plans by Josef Schuster in the Helmut-Qualtinger-Hof , where Karl Grell lived next to the namesake .

The Grellgasse in the Viennese district of Floridsdorf was named after Karl Grell in accordance with the resolution of the Vienna City Council Committee for Culture and Science on March 1, 2011.

Grell was married, daughter Renate Grell-Sturm (* 1953) is a pianist.
