Karl Gruber (politician, 1929)

Karl Gruber (born June 10, 1929 in Ossarn near Herzogenburg , Lower Austria , † April 5, 2011 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

After compulsory schooling, he learned the trade of model maker at Voith's location in St. Pölten . In 1945 he was drafted into the Volkssturm , but deserted. After the occupation of Lower Austria , he defended himself against the Soviet occupying forces as a youth officer for the metalworkers' union, he organized torchlight procession and created flyers. In 1949 he was dismissed from the USIA management because of his political activities - he was also district chairman of the Socialist Youth .

Because of his commitment against the October strike co-initiated by the KPÖ , he was also banned from staying in St. Pölten by the Soviet authorities and therefore lived in Scheibbs . There he became a local councilor and district party secretary in 1952, and in 1960 he returned to St. Pölten. There he became district party secretary and remained so until he became SPÖ district chairman in 1982 and stayed until 2003. From 1967 he was also a member of the state party executive, and later also of the federal party executive.

Between 1969 and 1998 Gruber was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and for years successfully campaigned against the closure of the Mariazellerbahn and the construction of the S33 expressway . From 1998 he was chairman of the Lower Austrian regional association of the Federation of Social Democratic Freedom Fighters. In this function he devoted himself to investigating the crimes of the Nazi regime and coming to terms with Austrofascism . In the process he discovered that there was a Dollfuss altarpiece in the Prandtauerkirche in St. Pölten and managed to have the picture removed from the St. Pölten Bishop Klaus Küng .

He was the brother of Willi Gruber , the former mayor of St. Pölten .

After his death in St. Pölten in 2011, Karl-Gruber-Platz was named after him.
