history

Necropolis from the La Tène period

On a terrace of the Traisen in the Langwiesfeld corridor, a necropolis (grave field) from the early La Tène period with over 25 body burials was found. The grave sites have been laid out almost exclusively rectangular in an approximate south-north orientation, the bodies are buried lying on their backs with added food and drinks. The grave 6/1984 shows a double occupancy. In the grave 17/1984 of a young woman, which was equipped with rich grave goods, a damaged bronze cervix ( torques ), a blue glass bead, a zoomorphic (in the shape of an animal) belt hook with metal fittings and decorative rivets, a bronze wire fibula and another fibula in the form of a sphinx with coral inlays were found found. This sphinx figure wears a bowl helmet with ear flaps and neck protection, as well as eye-catching animal ears. A bronze finger ring (still on the right hand), a decorated bowl and a beaker - both made from a potter's wheel -, two large vessels made of graphite clay and an iron meat knife were also discovered in this grave .

11th to 19th centuries

Ossarn was mentioned between 1074 and 1087 as "Ossarin duas hobas" in the oldest register of the dedications of the Benedictine monastery Admont . In 1186 the Styrian Duke Ottokar IV gave Ossarn to Luitwin v. Sonneberg. Luitwin's widow, a born Kuenringerin , donated the property to the Zwettl monastery . The bailiwick came to the rule Neulengbach .

Ossarn was already mentioned before 1200 with the current spelling. Before the 13th century, a mill (today's Kittel Mühle) was called in Ossarn. In 1416 a second mill appears in the chronicle (known today as Mantler Mühle - meanwhile out of order).

In 1444, the Toppl von Wasserburg, probably as pawnbrokers, were wealthy here. The sale of the village by Zwettl to Lilienfeld in 1454 was reversed. Zwettl pledged Ossarn to Hans Fuxberger in 1526, and to Christoph Concin von Wocking in 1543, but had to surrender Ossarn afterwards. In 1563 Christoph von Althan called himself Herr zu Murstetten , Einöd and Ossarn, but in 1591 the Concin had 25 houses in Ossarn.

20th century

On April 1, 1939, Ossarn (this consisted of the cadastral communities of Ossarn and upper winds) was incorporated into Herzogenburg. At the beginning of the 20th century, a chronicler wrote:

“The municipality of Ossarn consists of two tax municipalities, 11,181 hectares in size, of which 10,144 hectares are forest. The comparison of the livestock 100 years ago with that of today: The number of horses has remained the same (previously 44, today 45). In contrast, the number of oxen fell from 10 to 2. The increase in cattle breeding rose only slightly (from 129 to 159).

Sheep farming has completely disappeared (from 239 to 3). Pig breeding increased almost five-fold (from 11 to 382). Ossarn currently has 74 houses, houses 42 to 74 are new buildings. "
