Karl Hammer (church historian)

Karl Hammer (born June 1, 1936 in Ansbach , † December 1, 2010 in Weil am Rhein ) was a Protestant church historian.

After graduating from high school in Ansbach in 1954, he studied Protestant theology in Tübingen, Göttingen, Heidelberg, Basel and Erlangen. He received his doctorate in 1961 at the University of Basel under Karl Barth with the thesis WA Mozart - a theological interpretation to Dr. theol. and completed his habilitation there in 1969 with a thesis on Christian, especially Protestant war sermons as well as the theological sacralization of war. This work, which is also distributed as a paperback, is also a biographical lexicon for theologians from the relevant field.

From 1967 to 1972 Hammer was pastor in Delémont . He then worked until his retirement in 1999 as a pastor in the Theodor parish of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Basel-Stadt . He was also an associate professor for recent church history at the University of Basel . He last lived in Weil am Rhein.
