Herbert Lochs
Herbert Lochs (born October 20, 1946 in Innsbruck ; † February 10, 2015 there ) was a German-Austrian doctor. Since July 1994 he has been director of the medical clinic and polyclinic specializing in gastroenterology , hepatology and endocrinology at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin . On October 1, 2009, he took over the management of the Medical University of Innsbruck as the successor to the prematurely dismissed Rector Clemens Sorg and held this office until September 30, 2013.
His scientific focus was on metabolism and nutrition as well as oncology and hepatology .
Life
Herbert Lochs graduated in 1964, his graduation with honors. In 1970 he became a doctor med. univ. from the University of Innsbruck . Between 1970 and 1972 an assistant at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Innsbruck followed. From 1973 to 1978 he was an assistant at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna , first at the 1st Medical University Clinic, later at the IV. University Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
In 1979, Lochs was recognized as a specialist in internal medicine by the Austrian Medical Association . A two-year study visit to the University of Pittsburgh followed from 1984 to 1986 . Among other things, he wrote scientific papers on the metabolism of parenterally administered dipeptides and the organ-specific metabolism of glutamine .
In 1985 he was awarded the license to teach internal medicine; his postdoctoral thesis was nutritional therapy for Crohn's disease .
From 1986 to 1994 Lochs set up his own working group at the IV Medical University Clinic in Vienna on the subject of metabolism and nutrition in gastroenterology . During this time he directed and published the European Crohn Study IV and the European Crohn Study VI (nutritional therapy for Crohn's disease and recurrence prevention in postoperative Crohn's disease). He also carried out studies on organ-specific metabolism of amino acids and dipeptides in humans.
In 1991 he was awarded the title of associate professor .
From July 1994 to October 2009, Lochs was director of the medical clinic and polyclinic with a focus on gastroenterology, hepatology and endocrinology at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. In 2008 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor of the First Order for Science and Art for his services in medical research . On October 1, 2009, he took over the office of Rector of the Medical University of Innsbruck.
In addition to work on clinical nutrition, Lochs published in particular on the topics of local therapy for bile duct, liver and pancreatic tumors, new therapeutic concepts for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, the importance of the intestinal barrier for catabolism and cachexia, genetics of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and rare metabolic diseases and mucosal flora in various gastroenterological diseases.
Activity in scientific societies
Herbert Lochs was the longstanding President and Vice President of the Austrian Working Group for Clinical Nutrition. He regularly organized the joint annual meetings of the German, Austrian and Swiss societies for clinical nutrition. Between 1992 and 1994, Lochs was President of the European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. In 1992 he organized the ESPEN congress in Vienna. From 2000 to 2006 he was President and Vice President of the German Society for Nutritional Medicine . Lochs regularly organized the Congress on Nutrition, Dietetics, Infusion Therapy in Berlin. In 2006 he organized the joint annual conference of the German, Austrian and Swiss societies for nutritional medicine in Berlin. Since 2004 he has been the European Councellor for Nutrition and Metabolism of the American Gastroenterologal Association. In 2003, Lochs developed and published the evidence-based guidelines for enteral nutrition of the German Society for Nutritional Medicine. Between 2004 and 2006 he developed and published the ESPEN Guidelines for Enteral Nutrition.
