Karl Heinrich Schattenmann

Karl Heinrich Schattenmann (born December 31, 1785 in Landau in the Palatinate , † May 15, 1869 in Buchsweiler ) was a Franco-German viticulture pioneer.

Among other things, he was President of the Agriculture Commission and Vice-President of the Agriculture Advisory Chamber of the Zabern district ( Arrondissement Saverne ) and an officer of the French Legion of Honor . In Buchsweiler, Alsace, Schattenmann was director of the mines.

In 1812 he acquired the so-called "Schlössel" in Rhodt unter Rietburg . There he experimented from 1863 with the replacement of the chamber building by the row building. In the case of a chamber, a vineyard is divided by lengthways and transverse timbers; in the case of row construction, the cross timbers are dispensed with. In the following period, the chamber building was largely replaced by the row building. Schattenmann also published articles on tobacco growing, tobacco drying, viticulture and the use of the “road roller ”.

Justus von Liebig wrote about Schattenmann: “Since 1841, in the field of road construction, one owes the embankment of stones on the streets by means of the pressure roller, which was finally introduced throughout France, to his persistence. The building of the railway was just as important to him as that of the Saar Canal. "

Karl Heinrich Schattenmann married Marianne Breu, née Jäger, in 1855 [no data known].
