Karl Herbster

Karl Friedrich Herbster (born August 9, 1874 in Lörrach ; † March 20, 1948 there ) was a local researcher of the Markgräflerland .

Life

Family and work

Herbster was a son of the businessman Karl Wilhelm Herbster and his wife Katharina, née Reichert. After attending the Hebel-Gymnasium in Lörrach , Herbster switched to the Protestant teacher training college in Karlsruhe . In 1893 Herbster became a teacher at the Grenzach elementary school . Messkirch , Schwetzingen , Binzen , Kandern and Lörrach were further stations of his teaching activity. In 1904 he married Anna Greder († 1930) in Grenzach, with whom he had two sons. At the First World War Herbster took part as an officer, and during the Second World War he became a pensioner again a teaching job at Lörracher lever Gymnasium.

In Grenzach, Herbster devoted himself to fishing on the Rhine in his spare time, about which he also published articles in Blätter aus der Margraviate . After he was transferred to Kandern in 1905, he dealt with the history of this town and collected a. a. with Albert Eisele and Hermann Daur the basis of the exhibits for the local history and ceramic museum. With both of them he also participated in the Hertinger Hebelschoppen .

In 1921 Herbster took on the task of reworking the chronicle of the town of Lörrach. A whole series of newspaper articles and lectures emerged from the preparatory work between 1921 and 1933, which were published in 1948 - half a year after his death - under the title Lörracher historical memories . He could not finish the revision of the chronicle.

In 1929 Herbster was one of the founding members of the Markgräflerland working group , for whose magazine "Das Markgräflerland" he wrote 14 articles about local history.

Herbster also worked in the Lörracher Museum Association and the local branch of the regional association “Badische Heimat” .

Honors

In the northern part of Lörrach , a square and a street were named after him.
