Karl Jacoby (born February 7, 1849 in Gumbinnen ; † January 7, 1939 in Hamburg ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Karl Jacoby, the son of a pastor, attended high school in Memel and, after graduating from high school on April 10, 1867, studied classical philology in Berlin and Leipzig , where he was particularly influenced by Friedrich Ritschl . On April 26, 1871 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , on November 3, 1871 he passed the teaching examination. Instead of a probationary year, he worked as a provisional teacher at Christian Friedrich Krause's private school in Dresden-Neustadt until April 1872 , then as a senior teacher at Leipzig's Nicolaigymnasium . On October 1, 1872, he moved to the Aarau Cantonal School in Switzerland as the main teacher of classical philology . On October 1, 1876, he became a senior teacher at the Royal High School in Danzig, where he was appointed high school professor on November 23, 1885. He found his final position as a senior teacher at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg , where he worked from April 1, 1886 to March 31, 1921. In 1918 he was deputy headmaster for a short time.

In addition to teaching, Jacoby was also scientifically active. His work concentrated on the ancient historians, in particular on Dionysius of Halicarnassus , whose language and textual criticism he had been dealing with since his studies at Ritschl's suggestion. From 1885 to 1905 his basic critical edition of Antiquitates Romanae was published by Teubner-Verlag . In addition, Jacoby published school editions of the Roman poets Catullus , Tibullus , Properz , Horace and Ovid .

Jacoby's academic estate, which mainly contained critical material on Dionysius, went to the Hamburg State and University Library after his death . Part of it was moved to Berlin during the Second World War and has been lost.
