Karl Köpping (also Carl Köpping ) (born June 24, 1848 in Dresden , † July 22 or July 23, 1914 in Berlin ) was a German painter and engraver . He also designed art objects from twisted glass.

He studied chemistry at the Dresden Polytechnic , from 1869 in Munich . In 1871 he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and studied painting. In 1876 he continued his studies in Paris .

He mainly dealt with the art of etching. In 1889 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts , Berlin (head of the master workshop for copperplate engraving), and in 1891 he was appointed professor. In the aftermath of the " Fall Munch " he was one of the founders of the free artists' association .

From 1896 to 1900 he worked for the exclusive magazine Pan . He mainly created etchings based on the well-known works of the past centuries, especially by Rembrandt , but also by Hals , Gainsborough and Munkácsy . He also designed Art Nouveau art objects made of twisted glass.

He was awarded the Knightly Order of the Legion of Honor and the first class medal at the Munich Art Exhibition and the Grand Prix of the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 .
