Career

World Championships 1954 and 1958

Karl Koller began his football career in Döbling near Vienna , where he made his debut in the championship in 1949. In 1952 Karl Koller made the leap into the national team, where he was able to convince in his first appearances against Belgium (2: 0) and Ireland (6: 0). He drove to Switzerland as one of the regulars for the 1954 World Cup and together with the Austrian Ernst Ocffekt formed the Austrian midfield. In Switzerland, the Austrian team sensationally achieved third place, with Karl Koller playing through all matches.

In the following season, the strong midfielder was able to win his first national title with Vienna. With the Vienna he triumphed in the championship with the same number of points before the WSC . After qualifying for the World Cup in 1958, Karl Koller made his way to Sweden with the national team . Austria caught a difficult group with England, Brazil and the then strong Soviet Union. So the Austrians ended in the group stage, but they could sell well. In the hard-fought 2-2 win against England, where Austria took the lead twice, Karl Koller also scored one of his rare team goals.

End of career in the team and with Vienna

With Vienna it no longer wanted to win a title: In 1961, Karl Koller and the team finished second in both the championship and the cup. With the Austrian national team he could not convince at the European championship in 1960 either. The team failed in the quarter-finals against hosts France. At the EM in 1964 , the end came in the round of 16 through a defeat against Ireland. Karl Koller's career in the team ended when he failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1966, although the Austrian Association, unthinkable today, had canceled participation in the 1962 World Cup due to the high travel costs to Chile . In the championship, Koller played with the Blue-Yellows until 1965 and ended his career after 836 games and 101 goals for Vienna.

Karl Koller lived in Blumau-Neurißhof , where he owned an inn until 2000 and was also buried there in the local cemetery in an honorary grave of the community.
