Karl Konrad Wilhelm Alexander Graf von der Groeben-Ponarien (born August 31, 1918 in Königsberg , † July 6, 2005 in Baden-Baden ) was an entrepreneur and founder.

Karl Konrad Graf von der Groeben's parents were Karl Harald Graf von der Groeben (1887–1921) and his wife Benita Agnes, née Countess Finck von Finckenstein (1890–1945).

Life

In view of the advancing Red Army , Karl Konrad von der Groeben and his wife fled on horseback at the end of January 1945 westward via Holstein to Bad Godesberg . His mother stayed in East Prussia and was murdered in Ponaria in February 1945 .

In 1951, the Marshall Plan enabled a generous American loan, with the help of which he was able to build a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Giessen . Works in Mainz and Wiesbaden followed. In 1986 he sold his beverage empire. When he wanted to buy back his estate in Poland and set up a German-Polish meeting place there, the negotiations turned out to be too cumbersome.

On vacation in 1990, he read Hans Küng's book Project Global Ethic , was enthusiastic about it and wanted to donate Küng five million D-Marks for his project - which initially didn't interest him. On October 23, 1995 in Tübingen the Baden-Württemberg Minister-President Erwin Teufel carried out the founding act of the Global Ethic Foundation , which is to serve the idea of ​​tolerance between the world religions from the interest. He also participated in community foundations . When he heard Christian Pfeiffer give a lecture on juvenile delinquency, in 1997 he supported the Hannover Bürgerstiftung, in which his friend Jörg Kastl was also involved, with half a million D-Marks to get projects to combat juvenile delinquency off the ground.

The following year, on the initiative of Anetta Kahane , he donated 250,000 D-Marks, with which the Amadeu Antonio Foundation was established. The foundation was named after the Angolan worker Amadeu Antonio Kiowa , who was one of the first known victims of racist violence in Germany after reunification.

In 2001 the Karl Konrad and Ria Groeben Foundation was established, the purpose of which is to promote international attitudes, tolerance in all areas of culture and the idea of ​​international understanding. It contributes to the intellectual and practical exchange between the Abrahamic religious communities . He and his wife also participated in the Barnim Uckermark community foundation.

Groeben married Marie-Agnes Countess von Lehndorff (1916-2014), with whom he had the sons Friedrich (* 1943) and Georg Siegfried (* 1946). You were born on your father's estate Ponarien on Lake Nari (Jezioro Narie) in East Prussia.

Groeben and his second wife Verena Baronesse von Engelhardt acquired the Eickstedt estate in the Uckermark after 1990 .
