Karl Ludwig Matthäi , also Karl Matthäy or Carl Ludwig Matthaey , (born March 21, 1778 in Meißen ; † August 9, 1848 in Dresden ) was a German builder and writer.

Life

Matthäi was born as the son of the modeller at the Meissen porcelain manufactory Johann Gottlob Matthäi. In 1794 he and his family moved to Dresden, where they lived in Neumarkt 571. In the same year Matthäi was enrolled at the Dresden Art Academy , where he studied architecture with Gottlob August Hölzer .

After completing his studies, he went on an educational journey that took him to Bremen, Copenhagen and Vienna for several years. After the Wars of Liberation , he returned to Dresden as an architect in 1814.

In 1817 he was appointed Count Stolberg's master builder of the County of Wernigerode , where he carried out several construction projects on behalf of Hereditary Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , including the castle church. However, the employment in the Harz was not very satisfactory, so that in the following years he kept coming back to Dresden to manage construction projects and after a short time resigned from the master builder in Wernigerode.

From 1830 to 1833 he lived and worked near Kalisch , from 1842 to 1847 in the Bohemian town of Teplitz . Matthäi mostly suffered financial hardship and often had to make ends meet by teaching and drawing embroidery patterns.

In addition to being a builder, he was also an author. He wrote writings on various handicrafts and to raise the artistic style in the handicrafts.
