Karl Mang (architect)

Karl Mang (born October 5, 1922 in Vienna ; † September 5, 2015 ) was an Austrian architect.

Mang attended secondary school in Neustiftgasse and was drafted into the German armed forces after graduating from high school . Due to a serious wound, he returned to Vienna in 1944 and began studying at the Technical University in Vienna . However, he was drafted again and was only able to resume his architecture studies with Friedrich Lehmann after the Second World War in October 1945 . After completing his studies, he was Lehmann's assistant at the university from 1948 to 1954. In 1950 he received a scholarship from the Italian Foreign Ministry for a stay in Italy and stayed at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome on the mediation of Karl Holey . From 1952 Mang worked as a freelance architect. From 1955 to 1963 he was a teacher at the Mödling State Trade School . He then held lectures at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna until 1972. From 1972 to 1983 he was President of the Austrian Design Institute . In 1983 he held a visiting professorship at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. In 1986 he was appointed a member of the Monument Advisory Board.

With his wife, the architect Eva Frimmel (1927–2000), he was known for innovative design in the field of trade fair and exhibition architecture. In addition to worldwide commissions for exhibition designs, he was also entrusted with the reorganization of the secular and spiritual treasury of the Art History Museum in the Vienna Hofburg in the 1980s .

Mang was an honorary member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .
