career

Oberliga Südwest and Bundesliga, 1960 to 1964

The striker Karl Meng, who came from SV Wellesweiler to 1. FC Saarbrücken, played an international match in Saarbrücken on May 26, 1960 in the German national soccer team of amateurs . It was the first international match after losing the Olympic qualifiers against Poland and Finland in April and May. In the 6-2 win against France Meng distinguished himself as a two-time goalscorer and together with Gerhard Neuser formed a dangerous left wing of the German team.

On the first day of the round 1960/61, the man from Wellesweiler made his debut in the away game of Saarbrücken against VfR Frankenthal in the Oberliga Südwest . The left winger also scored his first goal in the league. 1. FC Saarbrücken won the championship in the southwest and the newcomer had his share of eleven goals in 27 games. In the final round of the German soccer championship in 1961, he played five games against Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburger SV. In the last year of the league, 1962/63, he was under coach Helmuth Johannsen behind the regular players Erich Maas , Horst Remark , Dieter Krafczyk , Rainer Schönwälder and Heinz Vollmar with 14 appearances and four goals, the first substitute player in the attack of the Saarlanders, which to the round 1963/64 were included in the new Bundesliga. From 1960 to 1963 Meng had played 58 games with 17 goals in the Oberliga Südwest.

In the Bundesliga, coach Helmut Schneider supervised 1. FC Saarbrücken, Johannsen had returned to the north and had taken over Eintracht Braunschweig. On the first day of the new class, on August 24, 1963, Karl Meng was there. 1. FC Köln made a guest appearance in the Ludwigsparkstadion and Meng stormed the left wing. With goals from Wolfgang Overath and Christian Müller , Cologne won 2-0. Meng made his fourteenth appearance on Matchday 30. The first Bundesliga round ended with a 1-1 home game against FC Schalke 04 for 1. FC Saarbrücken, bottom of the table. Meng gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. Since Meng had fought in vain for a regular place in the previous round, he moved to the 1964/65 round to local rivals Saar 05 Saarbrücken from the St. Johann district in the Regionalliga-Südwest .

Regionalliga Südwest, 1964 to 1967

With goalkeeper Heinz Angel , defender Gerd Peehs and the attackers Fritz Altmeyer and Herbert Schieber, coach Otto Knefler had qualitatively considerable players, so that together with Karl Meng, fourth place came about in 1965. The derbies against 1. FC Saarbrücken ended with 2-0 home wins for the respective host. In 1966 it went back to sixth place and both derbies were clearly decided by 1. FC Saarbrücken. After the third season in 1966/67, when Saar 05 was 10th, Karl Meng ended his career as a contract player. His last game in the regional league he played on May 7, 1967 in the 2: 3 away defeat at Borussia Neunkirchen. From 1964 to 1967 he had completed 80 games with eleven goals for Saar 05 in the Regionalliga Südwest.
