Karl Miller (born August 2, 1931 in Straiton , † September 24, 2014 ) was a British literary critic , editor and writer .

Life

Miller attended the Royal School of Edinburgh and Downing College , Cambridge . He became literary editor of The Spectator magazine and the New Statesman . From the latter position Miller resigned because he could not agree with the editor of the magazine Paul Johnson to what extent the literary magazine should be open to difficult topics. Another point of contention was Johnson's dislike of the Beatles and their fans (Berry 214).

Miller was then editor of The Listener magazine from 1967 to 1973 and the London Review of Books from 1979 to 1992 , which he founded. From 1974 to 1992 he was also Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London .
