Karl Richard Mehnert

Karl Richard Mehnert (born June 19, 1913 in Berlin ; † April 12, 1996 there ) was a German mineralogist and petrologist .

Mehnert received his doctorate in 1938 at the University of Leipzig ( The Meta-Conglomerates of the Wiesenthal Gneiss Range in the Saxon Ore Mountains ). He was a private lecturer in Freiburg im Breisgau and from 1954 professor for mineralogy at the Free University of Berlin and director of the mineralogical institute there.

He is best known for his work on migmatites (on which he wrote a standard work). At the end of the 1930s he recognized from field research in the Black Forest that the migmatites are of anatectic origin and precursors of granite formation (as did Otto Heinrich Erdmannsdörffer and Rudolf Wager at the same time ).

In 1961 he was accepted into the Leopoldina . In 1967 he received the Hans Stille Medal , in 1976 the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal .
