Karl Sachs (Romanist)

Karl Ernst August Sachs (born March 31, 1829 in Magdeburg ; † August 1, 1909 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was a German Romance studies and lexicographer .

Life

Born in Magdeburg, Karl Sachs completed his studies in classical philology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . As a result, Sachs taught at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin , and from 1852 at the Luisenstädtischer Realgymnasium in Berlin. In 1855 and 1856 he stayed in France and England to perfect his language skills . After his return to Germany he was employed at the Friedrichsgymnasium in Berlin .

After Karl Sachs graduated from Rostock University in 1858 as Dr. phil. After receiving his doctorate , he moved to Brandenburg in the autumn of the same year. There he was appointed professor in 1871 until his retirement in 1894 at the Saldern Realgymnasium . Karl Sachs died in 1909 at the age of 80. There has been a Karl-Sachs-Strasse in Brandenburg since 1939.

Karl Sachs belonged to the Freemason Lodge Friedrich zur Virtue in Brandenburg an der Havel and was one of its most famous members. From 1877 to 1886 he acted as their master of the chair .

Karl Sachs published school editions by English and French authors. Together with Césaire Villatte , he published the encyclopaedic French-German and German-French dictionary (2 parts, 1871–80), which was published many times.
