Karl Schlierf

Karl Schlierf (born May 3, 1902 in Memmingen ; † February 9, 1990 in Nördlingen ) was a German lithographer , graphic artist and painter .

Life

Karl Schlierf was born in Memmingen in 1902. He moved to Nördlingen with his parents in 1912. His father made sure that Schlierf learned the profession of railroad worker first.

He spent important apprenticeship years with the painter Dickreiter in Würzburg (1936), later with Frey-Moock in Zurich (1936-1939), Toni Binder in Vienna (1942-1944) and Max Rankl in Kempten (1953). The wartime verschlugen Schlierf occupationally to West Prussia . Stationed in Bromberg , he exhibited there for the first time together with other West Prussian painters. The post-war period led Schlierf to the Allgäu and Lake Constance . In Kempten he found his wife Lucie. In 1952 Schlierf in Kempten became a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Swabia-South. Since 1954 Schlierf exhibited regularly at the Swabian Art Exhibition in Augsburg .

Initially primarily committed to graphics and lithography , Schlierf later increasingly worked in oil , tempera and watercolor . His preferred subject areas were landscape , architecture and still life .

From 1948 Schlierf was involved in art exhibitions in Nördlingen such as the Rieser Kulturtage . In his more mature years, Karl Schlierf felt increasingly connected to Nördlingen , the city of his youth. During this time he dealt intensively with the former Free Imperial City and the landscape of the Ries crater . From 1969 onwards, Schlierf went public with publications. In addition to calendars, this includes books about the city of Nördlingen and the Ries.

Karl Schlierf was buried in the old cemetery in Nördlingen in 1990.

Awards

Certificate for the Silver Citizen Medal

In 1982 Karl Schlierf was awarded the silver citizen medal of the city of Nördlingen on his 80th birthday.

After his death, the newly created square in front of the Nördlinger Stadtbücherei Karl-Schlierf-Platz was named in his honor.

Applied techniques

Karl Schlierf created works of art using a wide variety of techniques. These included oil, mixed media, tempera, watercolor, monotype, etching, drypoint and etching, lithography, color lithography, linocut, red chalk, charcoal, ink and oil pastel.
