Karl "Ossi" Schmidt (born February 17, 1935 , † January 23, 2011 in Fürth ) was a German football player. From 1955 to 1963, the versatile offensive player for SpVgg. Fürth scored 72 goals in 218 league games in what was then the first-class soccer Oberliga Süd .

career

After his change for the 1955/56 season from the TSV Burgfarrnbach district club , where he had learned the ABCs of football as a nine-year-old in the school and youth department, from the Middle Franconia 2nd amateur league to SpVgg Fürth , he graduated from the "Kleeblatt-Elf" 400 games, including over 200 in the Oberliga Süd , the top German division at the time. He was twice the top scorer in SpVgg Fürth (season 1959/60 with 11 goals and 1960/61 with 13 goals). The fast and extremely tricky attacker, who knew how to convince in the storm center as well as half right or right winger, made his debut under coach Hans "Bumbes" Schmidt on August 28, 1955 in an away game against VfB Stuttgart in the Oberliga Süd. The game had a memorable character for the young attacker: first as his debut in the league and then in a 7-0 defeat. But already on the third round match day, September 11th, he was able to distinguish himself as a center forward in the World Cup system used at the time with a 4-1 home win against BC Augsburg as a two-time goalscorer and the hopes from the friendly game on August 7, 1955 against Borussia Dortmund, where he had drawn attention to himself in a 4-4 draw with three goals, confirm. At the side of teammates such as Max Appis , Hans Bauer , Richard Gottinger , Horst Hoffmann , Karl Mai and Herbert Erhardt , he completed 24 league appearances in his debut year in the league and scored seven goals.

"Ossi" Schmidt experienced his best league placement in 1957/58 when he reached 4th place. A significant increase in performance in the second half of the season had brought the green-whites far forward, including 2-1 successes in the "Franconian Derby" on January 19, 1958 at 1. FC Nuremberg and on April 6 at leaders Eintracht Frankfurt. After the 2-0 home win on matchday 30, April 13, 1958, Fürth finished fourth, two points behind 1. FC Nürnberg as runner-up. The Karlsruher SC as champions were three points ahead of Fürth. Schmidt had played 29 league games and scored seven goals. In the last year of the old first-class league era, 1962/63, the versatile attacker had played in all 30 league games for Fürth and had scored 13 goals when reaching ninth place. Schmidt said goodbye to Fürth under coach Jenő Vincze with a 0-1 away defeat at Bayern Munich on April 28, 1963 from the league. He actually played his last game in the Fürth jersey in a friendly on June 23 (7: 3) against FC St. Gallen from Switzerland. As a center forward he scored two goals. Fürth was included in the second -rate regional soccer league south for the 1963/64 season and "Ossi" Schmidt therefore accepted the offer from the "Club".

In 1963 he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg to play in the newly founded Bundesliga . The sale was controversially discussed in the general meeting of SpVgg Fürth, but in the end Schmidt was transferred to 1. FC Nürnberg for “economic reasons” for DM 50,000. For half of the transfer fee, a new fence was finally built around the Ronhof sports park. Schmidt played eight games at 1. FC Nürnberg and ended his active career in 1965 after tearing his Achilles tendon. He trained several teams in Fürth and Erlangen, including the amateurs of SpVgg Fürth.

He chose his nickname after his model Oskar "Ossi" Rohr .
