Life

Karl Schnell was the second eldest of three sons (" Gebrüder Schnell " → Johann Ludwig Schnell , → Hans Schnell ) of the Burgdorf lawyer Johann Schnell (1751–1827), who made a name for himself in the liberal movement in the canton of Bern as a supporter of the Helvetic Republic had made. Like his father, Karl Schnell became a lawyer and received his doctorate from Heidelberg University in 1809 and became a notary in 1811. At first he worked as an assistant to his older brother, the clerk Johann Ludwig Schnell. After unsuccessfully applying for a professorship at the Bern Academy, he acted as a bitter enemy of the aristocratic regiment of the Restoration period as an advocate for the discontented rural population of the canton of Bern. After an intermezzo as government secretary in Aarau 1816-1817, he returned to Burgdorf, where he again acted as a lawyer for the politically disadvantaged rural population in Bern.

After the July Revolution of 1830 , Karl Schnell took part in the Burgdorf People's Assembly on December 3, 1830, organized by his brother, and at the Münsingen People's Assembly on January 10, 1831, as a speaker for the convening of a constitutional council that was independent of the previous government. In February 1831, together with his brothers, he founded the first liberal weekly newspaper, the " Berner Volksfreund ". After the political upheaval in Bern in 1831 he became a member of the upper court and governor of Burgdorf.

At the national level, Schnell vehemently advocated a federal revision in the spirit of the radical liberal movement. As a member of the parliament of the Canton of Bern, he was one of the founders of the Seven Concordat of the regenerated cantons and became a member of the government in 1833. In 1838 he and his brother Hans resigned from all offices after the Napoleon trade . He continued to write articles for the Bernese friend of the people and became mayor of Burgdorf, but did not continue his political career. He died on December 14, 1844 under unexplained circumstances near Aarau during a night hike.
