Karl Stoerk (* 17th September 1832 in the oven , Empire of Austria ; † 13. September 1899 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian laryngologist and the brother of the jurist Felix Stoerk .

Life

Karl Stoerk studied medicine at the Universities of Prague and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1856. He then worked as an assistant to Ludwig Türck , with whom he developed the laryngoscope .

In 1864 he became the first private lecturer in laryngology to become a professor . Eleven years later he became a full professor at the University of Vienna, where he headed the newly established laryngological clinic. In 1888 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

Karl Stoerk found his final resting place in the old Jewish section of the Vienna Central Cemetery (Gate 1, Group 8, Row 62, No. 43).

In the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna - the university's hall of fame - there has been a bust of Stoerk, created by Johannes Benk , since 1907 . As part of “purges” by the National Socialists in early November 1938, ten sculptures by Jewish or supposedly Jewish professors in the arcade courtyard were overturned or smeared with paint in connection with the “ Langemarck Celebration ”. At this point in time, the acting rector Fritz Knoll had the Arkadenhof sculptures checked; on his instructions, fifteen monuments were removed and placed in a depot, including that of Karl Stoerk. After the end of the war, all damaged and removed monuments were put back in the arcade courtyard in 1947.
