Karl Theodor White

Karl Theodor Weiß (born February 13, 1872 in Schwetzingen ; † May 12, 1945 in Erfurt ) was a German lawyer, paper historian and watermark researcher .

Life

After graduating from high school in Ettenheim , he studied philology, German and history in Freiburg , Strasbourg , Tübingen and Heidelberg . At the father's request, a traineeship at the Grand Ducal State Library in Karlsruhe was followed by a law degree. The doctorate took place at the Philological Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. After he was already interested in old books and manuscripts as a high school student, he began collecting handmade paper out of an interest in watermarks. In 1897 he founded the German Paper Museum as an individual .

His son Wisso Weiß was also active in the field of watermark research.
