Karl Theophil von Essen

Karl Theophil von Essen (born March 24, 1846 in Wechmuth, Estonia , † January 9, 1932 in Tokyo ) was a German-Baltic railway engineer and entrepreneur .

Life

Kark Theophil von Essen was the son of the major general and owner of the estates of Wechmuth and Kiekel , Alexander von Essen and his second wife Julie née Freiin von Dellingshausen. From the winter semester 1865 to the summer semester 1869 he studied construction at the Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe . At the beginning of his studies he became a member of the Baltica Karlsruhe, later the Corps Baltica Danzig . After completing his studies, he initially worked from 1869 to 1870 as an engineering intern at the Leonberg building authority.

From 1870 to 1871 he was an engineer on a southern Russian railway run by Baron C. von Ungern-Sternberg . From 1872 to 1881 he was a senior engineer on the Kharkov-Nikolaev Railway in Russia. In addition, from 1873 to 1903 he was the owner of an iron foundry and factory for agricultural machines in Nikolayev.

From 1888 to 1903 he was President of the Nikolayev Stock Exchange Committee. From 1904 to 1917 he was a member of the board of directors of the Transbaikal Railway in Irkutsk as a representative of the Russian Ministry of Finance . After the October Revolution he lived with his daughter Helene in Tokyo.
