Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse (born October 15, 1797 in Oldenburg , † November 25, 1855 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist and linguist .

Life

Heyse attended the grammar school in Oldenburg , where his father Johann Christian August Heyse (1764–1829) taught, from 1807 then the grammar school in Nordhausen , where his father now worked as principal. From 1812 to 1815 he was tutored at Wilhelm von Türks private educational institution in Vevey .

After a brief activity as tutor of Wilhelm von Humboldt 's youngest son, he studied philology at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität from 1816 , among others with August Boeckh . From 1819 to 1827 he lived as a tutor in the family of the banker and state councilor Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy , where he also worked as a tutor for his son Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy . On the side he continued to attend lectures at the university, from linguistics with Franz Bopp to philosophy with Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel .

In 1827 Heyse completed his habilitation at the Berlin University, where he received an extraordinary professorship for philosophy in 1829. He lectured on Greek and Latin literature, philosophy of language and general linguistics.

His most famous publications were continuations and adaptations of the grammatical and lexicographical works of his father. His main linguistic work, System der Sprachwissenschaft , only appeared after his death.

His son Paul Heyse (1830–1914) became a celebrated writer and in 1910 received the Nobel Prize for Literature .
